Torch work Workshop: Leaf Pendant Creations Skill Level: Beginner This workshop introduces participants to the art of Torch work through the creation of a beautiful and simple glass leaf pendant. Students will learn foundational techniques, including shaping, working with tools, and adding decorative elements to personalize their piece. 1. Welcome and Introduction • Meet the Instructor: Brief introduction and overview of experience. • Safety First: Discussion of safety equipment, workspace rules, and proper handling of materials and tools. • Overview of the Process: Explain what participants will accomplish during the class and show an example pendant. 2. Tools and Materials • Overview of tools: torch, mandrels, tweezers, marver, and shaping tools. • Explanation of materials: borosilicate glass rods, frit (coloured glass), and stringers. 3. Demonstration • Step-by-step live demo by the instructor: 1. Heating and pulling glass into a teardrop shape. 2. Adding ridges to mimic the texture of a leaf. 3. Creating the stem and loop for the pendant. 4. Incorporating color using frit or stringers. 4. Hands-On Practice • Supervised Practice: • Participants take turns at the torch with the instructor guiding each step. • Assistance with creating the leaf shape, applying texture, and attaching a loop. • Focus on heat control and proper tool handling. • Personalization: • Optional: Add colour accents, swirls, or texture for unique designs. 5. Cooling and Finishing • Discuss the annealing process: placing pieces in the kiln to cool. • Explain finishing touches: cleaning the pendant and adding a cord or chain (provided). 6. Q&A and Wrap-Up • Reflect on the skills learned during the session. • Answer questions about tools, techniques, or future classes. • Provide resources for purchasing materials and practicing at home. • All necessary materials (glass rods, frit, stringers, and pendant cords). • Safety gear (gloves, safety glasses, etc.). • Access to tools and equipment during the workshop.
